For the last few years, the Fediverse has mostly been a salve, a place of succor. It's also a place that makes me laugh, and there's no place like the Fedi when the northern lights are peaking somewhere But these last 24 hours have been nothing but cup after cup after cup runnething over I'm so glad I've found my tribe. Y'all are the fucking best. Thank you

Fedi hive mind please help For my first ~4 years here, all I had to do to read #alttext was hover the word 'ALT' in the image Sometime in the last month, that stopped working, and nothing I do allows me to see the alt text. I've tried opening the image but... no dice. I read Mastodon in a browser (safari) on a MacBook Air and all my software is up to date On of the great joys of Fedi is reading all of the wonderfully decriptive and funny alt text and I'd like it back please....

Let's assume there are enough votes to impeach Trump. Setting aside the debate about "Dems need to move forward" vs a desire for justice and/or retribution Is impeachment the tactical political move? Yes, Trump is a madman who absolutely should not have the nuclear codes, but Vance is Thiel's guy, and Thiel's smarts worry me almost as much as Trump's stupidity [To be clear, there need to be trials for Musk, Hegseth, Kushner, Ice, and a whole host of others. This quest...

These fuckers "Google announced Tuesday that early next year it would turn off artificial intelligence tools in its popular software for K-12 students, unless school administrators explicitly choose to make such tools available. Executives at the tech giant said they wanted to be responsive to educators and parents who have asked for more control in how children interact with A.I. But there is a catch: Schools that choose to restrict A.I. entirely will also lose access to Google search.&...

What's your fantasy win today? You're limited to one specific race For me it's Talarico. As much as I want Susan Collins to lose, I want Talarico to win more

Seen this video floating around the last 24 hours but most versions of the clip stop 30 seconds too soon This one hits home because I remember the day I had to explain to my then 10-year-old that he was indeed circumcised https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFipAtefUWw

I've done poll watching in Las Vegas for the last three elections and did ballot curing in Nye County in 2020 I can't bring myself to do it this year. NV is an open carry state and, based on how aggressively people drive in this town, it's too easy to imagine a shooting at the polls. If I had my way, I wouldn't be in the country at all next week, and if the votes break the way I hope, I don't want to be here in January either Of the many many many things I hate about Trump,...

This seems healthy and totes normal Playing the state’s energy market has become more profitable than mining bitcoin "On the hottest and coldest days, when demand for electricity peaks and the price soars, the bitcoin miners either sell power back to providers at a profit or stop mining for a fee, paid by ercot. Doing so has become more lucrative than mining itself. In August 2023 Riot collected $32m from curtailing mining and just $8.6m from selling bitcoin." https://www.economist....

Filling out the online forms for physical therapy. I've gotten through 40 screens of nonsense when I get to the question: Is there any other information regarding your medical history that is important for us to know? I wrote: I've been told that I have dangerously sexy earlobes

This is just so bleak "Late last year, Marissa Mayer was struggling with what felt like an impossible task. Her daughter Marielle was turning 10, and Marielle’s teacher wanted three bullet points summarizing what made her special. Mayer — the former chief executive of Yahoo and a pioneer at Google, where she was the first female engineer — likes cracking a hard problem. But she felt overwhelmed by the range and complexity of potential answers. So Mayer asked her personal A.I. assistant,...

I'm at urgent care with my spouse of nearly 30 years. He's been very sick for the last few days and has an extremely hard time standing up (combo of weakness and dizziness.) He's got a 101 fever, and his BP is 89/58 (that was the second read, the first was even lower) Anyway, they need a urine sample and the nurse says she's going to bring him a urinal because they don't want him to risk standing up. She laughed VERY hard when I said, "Awesome! I've never seen hi...

There's a thread over on Bluesky asking about the first video game you remember playing. I can't help but think the answers would be more interesting here Mine was _Tank_, a sit-down two-player arcade game made by Atari. Our family used to go skiing about an hour north of Montreal every year and we stayed in Le Chantecler Hotel. There was a Tank in the hotel lobby It was 1974 so I was 7. (I had a LOT of pinball under my belt by then.) Between me and my brothers, we probably dumped $50...

Hey @mattblaze@federate.social My oldest kid moved to NYC as a student in 2023. We continued to receive ballots for him here as this was still his primary address, and he voted in NV in the 2024 presidential election In 2025 he started working in NYC (while still a student) and voted in the NYC primary as he now considered himself a resident by virtue of receiving tax documents there He never actively canceled his registration here. I am sure he thought it happened automagically once he voted...

Watching _The Inventor: Out For Blood In Silicon Valley_,, the Alex Gibney doc about Theranos Holy shit. It opens with Dan Fucking Ariely explaining how you need to "understand the journey" and how "if you look at [Elizabeth Holmes] from the beginning, it would be a cautionary tale about all of us" Uh, no Dan. Not all of us

I hope a bunch of Mastodonians are making time to see _You Can See Everything_ this weekend It's been ~48 hours since I saw the opening day screening and I really need to participate in a 60+ comments thread about it If you haven't seen it yet, try to avoid spoilers/reviews. Watching the trailer is fine, but knowing as little as possible is definitely the way to go with this doc. [And I'm someone who normally finds review embargoes ridiculous] #youcanseeeverything

Fun problem with my MacBook Air Even though I've got my power adaptor plugged in, and the Mac acknowledges that the power adaptor is plugged in, it doesn't charge the battery I happened to take this photo when the battery was at 94%, but it also happens when the battery is at, say, 30% Anyone got any guesses?
