About Elektrine
What it is
Elektrine is mail, chat, a timeline, gallery, passwords, files, calendar, contacts, search, DNS, and a VPN.
There are no ads, no trackers, and no third-party CDNs. Every file comes directly off Elektrine's own boxes, so loading a page here doesn't ping Cloudflare or Google behind your back.
Alpha is free. Omega is paid in Monero, a month or a year at a time. No credit card on file, no KYC, and nothing that renews by itself. Paying users pay the server bill, which is why the site never has to sell anything about you.
New accounts start with tight limits that go up as the account gets older. Free mail is the first thing botnets and spam scripts grab, and one spammer will get our whole IP block blacklisted by Gmail in twenty minutes. The limits keep everyone else's mail landing in inboxes. Omega drops the storage and sending limits right away because spammers don't pay XMR for burner accounts.
The vision
Elektrine keeps as little about you as it can, and where possible it keeps only data it can't read. A privacy policy is just text on a webpage. If a server has your data, eventually a subpoena or an exploit will get it out. Data that was never saved can't leak and can't be handed over.
No IP addresses are stored anywhere in the stack: not in web server logs, not in sessions, not in mail headers, and not on Maid VPN. An IP address is basically your street address, so it gets dropped at the door. Abuse still has to be stopped, so rate limits count in RAM, keyed by a hash that dies when the process restarts. Nothing touches the disk.
Mail can be locked to a key only your browser holds. Passwords and files are encrypted on your machine before they get uploaded, and Elektrine only stores the encrypted blob. Even if someone pulled the hard drives out of the datacenter or got root on the host box, there's nothing for them to read. If you lose both your password and your recovery code, we can't reset it for you. You're just locked out.
A signed warrant canary goes up regularly, and the transparency report lists the legal requests Elektrine is allowed to disclose.
The whole site also runs over Tor and I2P, if you don't want your ISP or local network seeing that you use it. And you won't get hit with twenty hCaptcha puzzles just for using an exit node.
Who is behind the project
Elektrine is built and run by one person, a paranoid schizophrenic.
Based in Detroit, Michigan.
Federation
You shouldn't need an account with the same company as someone else just to talk to them. Email has worked across different domains since the 70s, and Elektrine's social and chat features are built the same way.
The timeline federates over ActivityPub, so you can talk to Mastodon, Pleroma, and the rest of the fediverse without living on their instances. Chat federates over Arblarg, a server-to-server protocol between domains, so people on different servers can message each other directly.
Optional Bluesky integration can connect public posts to ATProto services.
