Frequently Asked Questions
General
Mail, chat, a timeline, gallery, passwords, files, calendar, contacts, search, DNS, and a VPN. No ads, no trackers, no third-party CDNs.
Sometimes. To control abuse, signup can require an invite code or a confirmed Monero payment. The sign-up page shows what applies right now.
Privacy
A username and a password. A recovery email is optional, and you don't need a real name or a phone number. See the Terms of Service.
Server logs record errors and mail delivery status, never IP addresses or the pages you open. They are deleted after six hours, aren't sold, and nothing builds a profile from them. See the Privacy Policy.
No. Connect and disconnect history is off by default, and client IPs are never stored on session rows. Free-tier limits use aggregate bandwidth counters only. See the Maid Policy.
No. A WireGuard or AmneziaWG private key is made in your browser and never sent to Elektrine; the server only gets the public half. That also means a lost file can't be re-sent: downloading the profile again makes a new key. Proxy protocols such as Shadowsocks and Trojan need a password the server can check, so those are stored, encrypted.
Usually. WireGuard is easy to spot, so Maid also offers AmneziaWG, which hides WireGuard's fingerprint, and VLESS REALITY, which looks like a visit to a well-known website. Pick them under All servers on the Maid page.
The sending server's IP address is never stored with a message. The original message is kept, encrypted at rest, so DKIM, PGP/MIME, and S/MIME signatures still verify in desktop mail clients. Private mailboxes never keep the original. Received headers inside a message are part of the message itself. See the Privacy Policy.
Yes. The current signed statement is at /canary.
Yes. /transparency counts the demands Elektrine is allowed to mention. A delayed-notice or non-disclosure order can postpone reporting a demand. During that wait, check /canary.
Yes. The onion address is in the site footer.
Yes. The I2P address is in the site footer. I2P visitors start on the no-JavaScript lite pages, because browsers block passkeys and in-browser encryption on .i2p addresses.
Payments
Pay with Monero at /pay/monero. Invoices use a unique address and confirm automatically.
No. Elektrine doesn't run identity checks for payment.
Vision and federation
Everyday tools that keep as little about you as possible.
Elektrine exchanges posts and messages with other servers, so you can follow and talk to people outside Elektrine.
The timeline federates over ActivityPub and chat over Arblarg, a server-to-server protocol between domains. Optional Bluesky integration connects public posts to ATProto services.
Modes
Direct messages, groups, and calls, with optional end-to-end encryption.
The social feed. It's part of the fediverse, so you can follow people on Mastodon and other servers.
Photos and videos in one media view.
Mutual connections. One of you sends a friend request and the other accepts it.
Posts you bookmark, sorted into folders.
File storage and sharing for your account, also reachable over WebDAV.
A password and secret store, encrypted in your browser before anything reaches the server.

IMAP, POP3, SMTP, JMAP, CardDAV, and CalDAV, plus API tokens for scripts.
