Here’s an example from an 1897 book review I found in the google books corpus: “There never was anything in all this world quite so provincial as American literature. When we over here are not reading slop we read the books that bear the approval of London.” Or this doggerel from the October 1920 issue of Farm Journal: “I read all kinds of printed junk / the good, the noble and the punk / the ancient and the new / and men who see me reading slop / predict that if I do not stop / my head will go askew.” These both seem like wiktionary’s current sense 8 (“Content or entertainment which is worthless, or produced and consumed mindlessly”), so I don’t see any need to credit 4chan or 21st-century anti-Semites in general. languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=73708#comment-16…

A few months ago, I was bullied by a few people (you know who you are) on #gnome-hackers matrix channel for my "lack of evidence" (which I had clearly provided) that many anti-LLM folks are quite aggressive. I eventually left the room because of the aggression I faced (oh, the irony!). I understand how it's hard to accept the truth because of personal biases (I'm pretty sure I have the same issue, like the rest of us) but even the most biased person has to admit that this comment is as aggressive as it can possibly get:

@jwz@mastodon.social autopoint is a new thing from gettext, They install their m4 scripts outside of $prefix/share/aclocal now which is causing the issue and autopoint fixes it.

If you don't have any customization to po/Makefile* id' just blow it away and let gettext to it. dshea has a comment about it https://www.jwz.org/blog/2026/09/xscreensaver-6-16/#comment-272004

This would mean that you also need to autopoint; aclocal; autoconf; autoheader to generate your configure script before releases. That'll make sure all the macros end up in aclocal.m4.

Ultimately the thing that makes people talk about AI as "slop" and distrust people who use it is that its impossible to gain the speed advantages of using LLM bots without abrogating responsibility for the veracity and good intentions and intentionality of the process. You have to trust the *bot* if you use these tools and we dont want to trust the bot. And the people who are subject to the process learn quickly not to trust it.

Wir diskutieren hier ja bereits länger, daher eine Umfrage: Wie bereits Abgeordnete der CDU um Friedrich Merz in Zeiten der Opposition gegenüber der Ampel so rufen jetzt auch Abgeordnete der Opposition gegenüber Schwarz-Rot das Bundesverfassungsgericht (BVG) an, um im Eilantrag wenigstens noch ausreichend Zeit für eine parlamentarische Beratung von Gesetzesvorlagen der Regierung (Exekutive) zu erhalten. Was meinst Du: Wird das Bundesverfassungsgericht die seit dem ersten Koalitionsvertrag und Koalitionsausschuss 1961 fortlaufende Entmachtung des deutschen Bundestages (Legislative, Gesetzgebung) stoppen? Oder wird es weiter betonen, dass die MdB ja de jure alle Rechte auch z.B. zu Fristsetzungen hätten? Zum historischen Hintergrund hier entlang:

This comment by @mjtsai@mastodon.social really struck me: "I still get into situations where Safari stops being able to load pages and I have to restart the whole Mac. I’m using other browsers more these days." Something is severely wrong, rotten in Cupertino, when a longtime Mac developer is driven from Safari. I personally struggle with Safari bugs practically every day. I suspect that Apple executives don't care, though, because of the iOS WebKit browser engine monopoly.

On today’s #transit ride on #marta ( city of Atlanta transit ) , it’s fuckin Saturday so I expected zero #transphobia , turns out a really hot looking #transmasc got on as I did and they were really fuckin cool so that didn’t stress me out nearly as bad. Question the to the void: would you read stories about the day to day life of an #eldertrans both from a public experience to a private one ? Die Antwort ist verblüffend präzise & zeigt auf, wie Wissenskommunikation zukünftig aussehen wird (ob uns das hier passt oder nicht): "Im Jahr 2025 wurden in Deutschland rund 8 Terawattstunden Wind- und Solarstrom ungenutzt abgeregelt [6]. Die Kosten für diese Ausfallzahlungen sowie für den stattdessen notwendigen Zukauf von fossilem Gas tragen die Verbraucher über die Netzentgelte [6]. Eine Analyse zeigt: Wäre die deutsche Batterie-Projektpipeline bereits vollständig am Netz gewesen, hätte ein Drittel dieser Abregelungen vermieden werden können [6]. Dies hätte den Verbrauchern allein in einem Jahr rund 800 Millionen Euro an Redispatch-Kosten & Gaskäufen erspart [6].
