"There was the incident where illegal Israeli settlers in the West Bank — who are financed, armed, enabled, and otherwise supported in every possible way by the Israeli government — viciously attacked a Washington Post photojournalist, breaking her ribs and fracturing her vertebrae, and a day later attacked a group of European diplomats from Belgium, France, and Poland (countries that, unlike Israel, actually are US treaty allies). The reaction was, well, muted. The Israeli government at first tried to cast doubt on the reports, accuse Palestinians of being the culprits, and even blame the diplomats. The US secretary of state said it was “not a good look.” The German government called it “troubling” and said it should “be criticized,” while the European Union called vaguely for “full accountability.” The Israeli government did arrest ten suspects and has now released nine of them from custody and into house arrest. Eight Palestinian prisoners released by the Israeli military have said they were tortured and threatened in custody. Israel has opened an underground #prison for detainees from #Hamas and #Hezbollah groups where they are denied access to sunlight, according to Israeli media cited by the Anadolu news agency. According to the Israeli public broadcaster KAN, the facility, located in central #Israel, is designed to house “the most dangerous individuals” from Hamas’s elite forces and Hezbollah’s Radwan Unit. “This is their natural place, underground,” far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who oversees the police, reportedly told KAN. The broadcaster said some 75 detainees were currently being held at the underground prison. “Even the small window in the ward has been sealed off for the detainees,” it added. The conditions under which Gaza's population is heading into winter are inhumane. But not enough people in my country are paying attention to the issue. Tonight's was the last pot banging demo outside Assen station this year. I'm hoping for some kind of Christmas miracle so we don't have to return on the 8th of January. After a two week break, we were supposed to be protesting for Gaza at Assen railway station again today. No-one else was there. It's cold and icy. That's presumably why people stayed away. While a million other things have been in the news since we last met to protest about Israel's disgusting behaviour towards Palestinians, an end to the genocide was not one of them.
