Happy birthday to the first woman to earn a doctorate in science, physicist and professor Laura Maria Caterina Bassi Veratti (née, & known throughout her life as Bassi, 1711-1778). I’ve shown her surrounded by the sort of state-of-the-art instrumentation she would have used in her lab to investigate electricity: an electrical machine, conductors, an aurora flask, a luminous discharge tube, a Lane electrometer, 🧵1/ https://minouette.etsy.com/listing/4436745646 #printmaking #womenInSTEM #histsci #physics #linocut

Scientists who discovered a third form of magnetism win major physics prize Physicists have uncovered a hidden third form of magnetism that challenges more than 100 years of established physics. Called altermagnetism, the discovery could transform future computing and electronics while opening an entirely new frontier in quantum research.

Update. New study: "With roughly the same number of men and women in the world, we should expect this [#gender] gap to close in an equal society. But what we see in reality is a persistent gap in #physics over time."

This is way above my pay grade, and I've only read the article, not the actual technical work underneath it (because my maths is insufficient to know what it's talking about, so there's not a lot of point). But it sounds really interesting. https://muellerberndt.medium.com/how-observer-path-holography-improves-on-the-standard-model-and-general-relativity-c971c376027e I've never heard of "observer patch holography" (note typo in slug text), but a theoretical framework which has just a single free variable but lets you derive general relativity and the standard model, correctly predicting a bunch of magic numbers that we input as free variables into the standard model, is interesting as hell. Maybe someone smarter than me has already looked at this and debunked it. Sabine doesn't seem to have done a video on it (or I missed it). And "one guy with four information theory axioms solves all of physics' problems" is definitely on the Hollywood-script end of the plausibility scale, but who knows? Weirder things have happened. @cenobyte@mastodon.thirring.org - thought of you, of course. #StandardModel #physics #GeneralRelativity #GR #ObserverPatchHolography #OPH #quantum

Brine shrimp are about a centimeter long and swim upside down, beating their legs madly and trailing their elongated abdomens behind them like tails. As scientists recently learned, these tiny swimmers can do more than just move themselves. Researchers have long thought that in a turbulent system like a current of #water, #energy flows in only one direction, from larger scales to smaller ones, or vice versa, depending on the system’s dimensions. But in observing the humble brine shrimp, scientists realized that — with just a tiny adjustment — the flow of energy could be reversed. The discovery capitalized on a fundamental, if often unrecognized, mathematical description of how forces interact to push energy through a system. #physics #turbulence

Superfluidity is the characteristic property of a fluid with zero viscosity which therefore flows without any loss of kinetic energy. When stirred, a superfluid forms vortices that continue to rotate indefinitely. Superfluidity occurs in two isotopes of helium (helium-3 and helium-4) when they are liquefied by cooling to cryogenic temperatures. It is also a property of various other exotic states of matter theorized to exist in astrophysics, high-energy physics, and theories of quantum gravity.[1] The semi-phenomenological theory of superfluidity was developed by Soviet theoretical physicists Lev Landau and Isaak Khalatnikov. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supercritical_fluid #eepy #longcat #physics #caturday #caturdayeveryday

everyone should realize that e-scooters are a physically risky form of transport, especially when driven above about 20km/h. if you fall off, you're going to have facial trauma at a minimum. just ask my 50-something brother who got stuck with a big dental bill. ALWAYS wear a FULL FACE HELMET on these things - a bike helmet isn't enough. and NEVER EVER ride with MORE THAN ONE RIDER on board. https://www.cbc.ca/news/health/e-scooters-pediatrician-survey-9.7305210 #Physics #SafetyFirst
