If you are lucky enough to have #solitarybees in your garden - LOOK AFTER THEM!
They build small solitary nests in cavities in the ground/timber/walls, fly for only a few weeks, don’t swarm and are superb #pollinators.

Good Morning!!!
You ask us:
‘Are these very small #bumblebees we’re seeing out foraging around now a specific species?’
A good question.
Thanks for asking it.
Here’s a brief thread to explain these diminutive beauties.
Please #repost / #share.
Likes are nice but reposts spread knowledge.
A small ask for the small bumblers.

“In a normal park, we estimated there were about 30 species of wild bees,” says Jens Ulrich, a former University of British Columbia (UBC) PhD student who worked with the city between 2021 and 2024 to study the meadows’ ability to attract wild #bees and hoverflies.
“In a park with a meadow, we saw that number jump up to something around 60 species per park – per year.”

You’ve been seeing very large #bumblebees on the wing for the past while.
Why?
Okay I’ll tell you why in this quick thread if you promise to #repost as the more people who know that these are queens the more likely that someone will help some out meaning more colonies next year.
Deal?

Bumblebee queens sit on their eggs to keep them warm.
To generate the body heat needed for this they will make up to 6000 flower visits per day to collect nectar.

Male bumblebees develop from unfertilised eggs.
They have no father.
So 100% of their genes will be in common with their mother, the queen.
They also have no stinger!

For most species of bumblebee the queens will usually only mate with one male.
Most males never actually get to mate successfully but if given the chance will indeed mate with more than one queen!

“Because honeybees aren’t native, they disproportionately love non-native plants … and that includes lots of invasive plant species,” MacIvor says.
“One of the biggest visitors to a lot of these non-native and invasive plants are honeybees, [and they] then set seeds and spread.”

I posted a new PeerTube video about overwintering honeybees. It's really just me rambling for a minute or so about what I've done with my hives but I'm always open for a discussion if a viewer has questions. The process is different for each zone but there's overlap for us all.
