Microplastics pollute nearly two-thirds of corals in Malaysia’s marine protected area, study finds

KUALA LUMPUR — Microplastics, tiny plastic particles about 5 millimeters (0.2 inches) or smaller, have settled into the skeletons of corals in a marine protected area in Malaysia, according to a recent study. The study, published in the journal Regional Studies in Marine Science, focused on Pulau Redang Marine Park, in the southern South China […]

Corals keep a record of pollution, pointing to a new monitoring method: Study

Maui, an island in the isolated Hawaiian archipelago, isn’t in one of the world’s most heavily developed or polluted coral-reef regions. Yet even there, human activity leaves an imprint in the very tissue of corals, altering their biochemistry, a recent study shows. The study, published in July in the journal Nature Communications, found 25 contaminants […]

What scientists found inside coral reefs could change the future of medicine

Beneath the beauty of coral reefs lies a hidden universe of microbes unlike anything scientists expected. Each coral species supports its own specialized microbial partners, many of which have never been studied before. These microbes produce a stunning variety of chemical compounds with potential uses in medicine and biotech. The discovery highlights just how much is at stake as coral reefs face growing threats.

After extreme thermal stress and runoff caused mass soft coral "slumping" in 2024, researchers are monitoring South Korea's Jeju Island closely. Widespread die-offs have stalled so far in 2026, but an upcoming Super El Niño threatens a repeat of the ecological damage. Elizabeth Claire Alberts reports for #Mongabay. https://mongabay.cc/hGwjUC #Corals #SouthKorea

‘Slumping’ afflicted soft corals around a South Korean island in 2024. Will it return this year?

JEJU ISLAND, South Korea — In April 2025, I zipped myself up into a thick wetsuit and inched down a steep, rocky ledge toward the gray-blue water encircling Beomseom, a small island off the southern coast of Jeju Island in South Korea. Then I leapt into the chilly sea and wriggled into my scuba gear […]

Scientists have found one of the world’s largest cold-water coral reefs deep off Argentina. Home to dozens of species new to science, the reef already shows signs of fishing damage. Researchers are now testing 3D-printed "artificial corals" to help restore this fragile ecosystem. Elizabeth Claire Alberts reports for #Mongabay. https://mongabay.cc/PWfmoh#Argentina #Corals

One of the world’s largest deep-sea coral reefs discovered off Argentina

Biologist Erik Cordes has spent much of his career studying cold-water reefs — coral systems typically found in chilly, dark waters far below the ocean’s surface. But his latest project took him by surprise when he and a group of colleagues discovered what might be one of the world’s largest deep-sea, cold-water reefs. Over the […]

Lost millennium of Galapagos deep-sea corals linked to major Pacific climate shift

Scientists have discovered that deep-water corals in the Galapagos region vanished for more than 1,000 years before eventually recovering. The findings reveal that deep-water coral ecosystems may be more susceptible to climate change than previously thought.
