Maybe go ahead with #GhostBSD as the "gateway drug"
into the BSD world. Then when you've "found your BSD feet" with it, hopefully easier to try plain #NetBSD or #OpenBSD.
I think that's what I might do. I used friendly PC-BSD back in the 00s but no BSD experience since. (Switching not urgent yet as I'm on Linux Mint Xfce X11, based on a 2024 LTS release, so presumably much less likely to contain slop than a cutting edge release.)

Hope my fellow #OpenBSD developers have a great time this week in Krk, Croatia at the #h2k26 #hackathon!

It's been a while since the last update!
The HDD live image of #OpenBSD/luna88k is now updated to the 8.0 release.
Great for LUNA-88K compatible emulators like nono and GXemul. Check the README for details.
Good morning! Part 00000010!
We are about to start (2026-11-01 @ 09:00 UTC) the planned maintenance window for all odd numbered hosts.

@Tionisla@mastodon.bsd.cafe finished.
A friend just rang. Was just asked to come over for some early coffee and biscuits at 2 o'clock, so any "ghost(bsd) busting" will have to wait for later :-)

Most of the highly-publicized security vulnerabilities in #Linux these days, including the recent kernel TCP RCE, are the result of races and/or memory corruption.
If #BSD were to catch on, all those AI bug-finding bots would be turned on the BSDs…which are written in C. There's probably plenty of vulnerabilities there too.
Perhaps fewer than Linux, since Linux is so jam-packed with enterprise features and weird optimizations, but still… 😬
Are #NetBSD and #OpenBSD prepared for this?

Ori Bernstein (ori@) has sent a follow-up mail about his experimental #GEFS port to #OpenBSD tech@, including a updated diff with newfs_gefs(8) utility, and more error handling.
[...]
First off, thanks to Martijn, and everyone else who tried it out and sent patches.
Everything is updated and rebased, and the diff has been regenerated with all of the lastest.
I've gone through a the error handling code. In theory the filesystem will handle errors mostly correctly. There are probably still places where theory diverges from reality. I've also forward ported most of the important bugfixes from 9front.

Some userspace tools have been done (you can now mkfs on openbsd!), but snapshot control hasn't.

I greatly lowered my AI attack surface this weekend. No more Linux kernel on my computers.
Sure, #GraphineOS on my cell phone has the Linux kernel, but things are changing fast...
I have only had Linux in this house since 1997, but now it is only #NetBSD and #OpenBSD
Amazing how much more memory is free and faster things are...

I set the "transplanted" OpenBSD setup from my broken secondary Notebook now as default on my primary machine. My FreeBSD install remains in case something goes side ways for now.
Next plan replacing GhostBSD on my old Dell Inspiron 1525 from 2009, which I use as a light couch surfing box... Hmm, either Open or checking out Net on it. Both should somewhat work. Open should support my wifi ootb. And not sure about performance of Net on this machine.
But first things firt: Tea, Darjeeling, hot, pumpkin bread, butter and some self made fruit jam as breakfast.

Pigs really can fly, the moon is made of cheese and Wine now runs on #OpenBSD!
Largely made possible by the work of Andrii (NethIafin), fabien@, and thfr@, 64-bit Windows applications (yes, games) run on -current!

You can now run the 64-bit Windows Steam client on #OpenBSD -current, a wine-steam downloader/launcher script has been provided as part of the new wine-extras port.
Be sure to read the pkg-readme.
Streaming Hungarian Folk Tales from my #OpenBSD machine at home to my #9front laptop over #yggdrasil.
This trashheap of a thinkpad shouldn't even be able to use this WiFi card, let alone do any of this. 😁 Because there is no official yggdrasil port for plan9 either... 🤣

@netbsd@mastodon.sdf.org This is great for people who have some familiarity with Emacs keybindings, or who want to gain that knowledge. It reminds me of mg in #OpenBSD in that regard.
For new users, I think the micro editor is the way to go. It uses the keybindings that most GUI programs use, so there's very little learning curve.
