Curious, as I've been testing the upcoming Mastodon design in our dev environment for the past 2 days. The new design isn't widely available yet, but mastodon.social likes to test with real users and installs alpha versions early.
So, a quick poll for Mastodon.social users and anyone on other instances with the new v5 design enabled (feel free to share this to reach more people):

Progress update: Mastodon Bird UI support for Mastodon v5 is progressing nicely.
Vanilla Mastodon v5 on the left
Mastodon v5 with Mastodon Bird UI v5 on the right
My goal is to keep the familiar Mastodon Bird UI on the latest version of Mastodon.
And yes, I'll add some trending posts and other stuff to the empty right panel, but those will only be available on our instance.

Replying to
Mastodon v5 alpha with Mastodon Bird UI v5 alpha and additional sidebar content in the test/dev environment for our Mastodon fork, mementomori.social.
It's coming together nicely.

I'm sorry why am I now forced to look at the Mastodon menu in what used to be the advanced UI where you could summon it from the hamburger if desired - and if I resize my desktop window to where I used to just be able to see Home, Notifications, and List, the fucking menu now slides over and covers up the Home content. And questionable Follow requests I'm ignoring now take up space at the top of Notifications. This #UI is #ShitUI put it back. #Mastodon5 #Mastodon @Gargron@mastodon.social
While I am #software #dev saavy, am not a #ui / #ux pro.
But to my mind if you have a control, that one might normally expect to see somewhere, that can be disabled by some global or scoped restriction or in this case a #Windows #domain/group #policy... DONT HIDE THE FUCKING THING.
Show the button in the same place, but disabled. And if you mouse over if it says "Disabled by " or "Restricted by group policy ".
Thread view redesign in Catodon
Today I merged many UI changes, mostly around how threads are viewed and navigated.
I took some of the good elements of Reddit, so now we have sorting by Old/New/Top (the default for the microblogging timelines is Old, and for forums it’s Top - both can change in settings) and a flexible replies section with collapsible/expandable branches.
Top-level posts now show the total number of replies under the whole thread, not just the direct/first level replies (but again you can change it back in Settings). I also saved much vertical space, so now you can read long threads with less scrolling.
If I may say so myself, I honestly believe it’s one of the best UIs on fedi, especially for reading conversations. I think that if anyone tried it, they would agree. Really, really happy with the results. It’s still fresh, so I will probably refine things here and there, but it’s pretty much exactly as I envisioned it.
Let us know what you think!

You know what would make #Mastodon even better? Making the post composition window larger than the post reading frame.
I'm old enough that even with reading glasses, my #eyesight needs the composition window larger so that I can locate the cursor accurately when editing. I don't need to edit other people's posts.
Make the composition window text at least as large as the featured post text, maybe even larger, not the size of the thread text.

The fediverse becomes more accessible and easy to use when we hide the complexity behind familiar and trusted flows and better user experiences.
If we want to save people from walled gardens, we need to provide a more frictionless onboarding experience, and empower them with privacy friendly discovery based on services and tools like Starter Kits and the People Directory!
No contact book uploads. No SMS verification. Just one tap auth and powerfully simple user interfaces

Nice.

he visual dictionary of UI. Describe the thing in your own sloppy words; you get the real name, the API symbol, and (if you using AI) a paste-ready prompt for your coding agent.
