In some shells it is easier and more comfortable out of the box: in my case it's ZSH, which provides editing of a multi-line input in two modes, either Emacs or Vi.
I choose Vi and thus I have a shell that behaves similar to that editor - on Esc pressed it goes into "normal Vi"-like mode and one might to move around and more.
Additionally, I configured it to invoke an $EDITOR (which is some Vi-like one in my case) on double Esc, so it opens the editor with the text from the shell in a buffer.
