@Feathercrown@lemmy.world @artISAn@lemmy.world #consciousness #AI #brain #neuroscience #computer #functionalism Even a “complete simulation” of a fruit fly brain would be no more than an approximation. I think you mean “emulation” and I agree. The simple reason is that we do not know scientifically all of necessary and sufficient functional mechanisms of consciousness, nor consciousness’s functional role in “intelligence” (which we also have trouble describing). If, and only if we we did, we would (given the right tools) be able to replicate it functionally (in principle) using computation. Specifically, I refer to a Universal Turing Machine (UTM) and the Church-Turing Thesis (the foundational principle of all computer science). EVEN THEN, there are computational problems that cannot be proved to be solvable by a UTM (e.g., the Halting Problem) and we don’t know what, if any role they play in consciousness. Bottom line for me: we are going to need a revolution in each of the sciences of psychoneurophysics, mathematical logic, and theory of computation before we can begin to talk about replicating consciousness in a machine.

#3GoodThings (#SF & the #brain)

  1. Was @ #UCSF yesterday & learned a bunch of cool things about the #brain & vision, specifically visual processing, which happens (from what I understand) in the occipital lobe. This info. will find its way into my WIP on #gardening.

  2. Walked 8 miles each day. The beauty of the bay & the bridges never ceases to amaze me, aka gives my brain a nice shot of #serotonin.

  3. Being a student again & having the best #neurologists share their time & expertise.

Human #brain is two separate organs, Stanford Medicine-led research finds A new study found brain is two separate organs adjacent to one another. Finding could aid research into #neurological diseases. Human brain consists of two ancient nervous systems packaged together — more primitive part that regulates our hearts’ beating, our breathing and other functions, and another that makes us distinctly human, capable of poetry, mathematics and wondering about our own origins.

#Children have borne the brunt of the #infections, making up >70% of confirmed cases. >80 children & adolescents have been hospitalized this year for complications like #pneumonia, which leaves patients gasping for air, & #brain swelling, which can cause lasting damage, including #blindness, #deafness & intellectual #disabilities. 💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🦇🧠 A 2021 study found #blind and sighted people can learn click #echolocation in just 10 weeks. Follow up scans by #Durham University researchers showed structural changes in the #brain’s visual cortex. A separate 2025 study examined how 30 million years of echolocation #evolution shaped dolphin and whale brains. 👉 https://www.sciencealert.com/humans-can-echolocate-and-it-changes-the-wiring-of-the-brain #neuroplasticity #science #biology #humanbody #sound #adaptation #learning #neuroscience #dolphins #whales #disability #humans #animals #bats

💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: Engineers at #PennState have developed a conductive #ink that works like face paint to create customizable electrodes for monitoring #heart, #muscle, and #brain activity. The #water-based ink dries on #skin within minutes, conforms closely for more accurate readings, and can be washed off and reapplied. In tests, the sensors tracked #ECG for 12 hours and fed muscle signals to a robotic #prosthetic. 👉 https://www.popsci.com/technology/colorful-paint-on-health-sensors/ #sensors #health #wearables #stem #ecg #emg #science #invention #engineering #biotech #tech #technology
