Join the protest on Sunday 31st of May, 12 pm, outside the Herston Road entrance to the park. Bring you signs, your voices, your family, your music. That will be the last day GIICA will let us use these 32 hectares of green space, and sit under centuries-old gum trees animals call home before they cut them down. https://www.savevictoriapark.com/trees (edit: sorry, my map had the wrong area, missed a 0 in my division 😅. Fixed now.) 5/? #conservation #BNE #Meanjin #Magandjin #Brisbane #SEQ #GIS

Even if you're not local, you can contribute by identifying observations to refine the data: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/identify?project_id=288305 Eventually, observations that reach a consensus end up in other databases, like the Atlas of Living Australia. This is a report from the ALA for the same area. It lists 21 "threatened species". https://archive.org/download/ALA_area_report_Barrambin_2026-05-28/areaReport1779975680564.pdf 8/? #conservation #biodiversity #iNaturalist #Barrambin #VictoriaPark

"The health of Indigenous lands and their ability to store vast quantities of carbon stem from the stewardship of the people who inhabit them." "Respondents from a wide range of countries, including Bolivia, Mexico, and the Philippines, mentioned using community monitoring or patrols to protect their land from outsiders and violations of traditional protocol." "New research […] also reveals a dangerous misconception that has taken hold in global climate discussions: the idea that Indigenous lands are so rich because they are remote or sparsely populated." #Forests need sustainable management and strengthening Indigenous rights and resources. “She realized that, you know, the people were also a very important part of the complex forest relationships,” Erica Gies says. “Which is much more of a reciprocity kind of mentality. If you take, you also give back. There is a responsibility to care for the system. Because if you don’t, and if you overexploit it, it would be really easy to starve, right?” Podcast: https://news.mongabay.com/podcast/2026/04/reciprocity-not-extraction-centering-an-indigenous-approach-to-forestry/ 🧵 #community #conservation #climate #indigenous

'The current fuel load in some Australian forests is not “natural”. It is a product of colonisation, which loaded Australian landscapes with fuel [because] frontier violence and massacres between the 1830s and 1860s removed [people] and disrupted a millennia-long relationship of care.' https://theconversation.com/colonisation-not-climate-change-first-primed-these-forests-to-burn-292997 #community #conservation #climateChange #indigenous #wildfires #Australia #eucalyptus #carbon

📰 𝗟𝗼𝗰𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗦𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗕𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗠𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗚𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗮𝘀 🌎 Uganda: Community‑led tree planting along the edges of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is giving residents access to medicinal, timber, and firewood species outside the gorillas’ habitat. 🦍 Less pressure on the forest means safer space for roughly 450 gorillas — nearly half the world’s remaining population, and still growing. 🤝 Batwa Indigenous leadership guides which species to plant, restoring degraded land while supporting biodiversity and local livelihoods. 🌿 Such community conservation increases tourism revenue, craft sales, and sustainable resource access. It also helps ensure people and gorillas “do not inconvenience each other,” as one craftswoman put it. 🔗 Details: https://news.mongabay.com/short-article/2026/09/ugandans-plant-trees-near-national-park-to-keep-people-out-of-gorillas-habitat/ #WildlifeWednesday #Gorillas #Uganda #Conservation #WildlifeConservation #Agroforestry #Biodiversity #HabitatProtection
