RE: https://indieweb.social/@chrisoliver/117527288349910415 #Proton CEO Andy canceled the #AI re-interviews for employees after getting exposed, gave employees a non-apology that was basically “I’m sorry you didn’t understand what I said,” and made zero commitments to change his behavior or his foolish AI push. If you’re a Proton subscriber, tell the Proton Foundation board know how you feel about this: foundation@proton.me

After switching from Gmail to #Proton Mail last year, it’s so upsetting to learn that Proton’s CEO is an AI-psychotic bully to his employees, and the CTO is also AI-pilled and toxic. They need to be removed. #AI #vibecoding #slopcoding #ToxicWorkEnvironment https://www.404media.co/manifestos-fear-and-loser-thinking-inside-protons-ai-reckoning/

@_elena@mastodon.social @tobias@social.tobiaseigen.org @TerryHancock@realsocial.life @doncow@mailcow.social With the most recent development of the Claude SSH backdoor it’s only a matter of time before those that are genuinely serious about security and privacy to make a stand. We see almost daily flaws in Ai code being exposed and the announcements like those from Tuta are red flags that will lead to the work environments like that at proton as you mentioned. #privacy #proton #tuta

A good way of thinking about companies like Proton or Anthropic that proudly declare they're using LLMs to code is that they've declared "we're replacing all of our junior engineers with unpaid interns from a temp agency." The unpaid interns have photographic memories and have memorized all of the code on github, but they're still pretty clueless and clumsy, and they also have zero loyalty to the company, zero ability to learn from mistakes, and zero understanding of or interest in the actual purpose of what they're building (actually, this comparison is unfair to interns on average, think of the least motivated and curious intern you've ever worked with). The remaining staff at these companies become managers, but in the most frustrating possible way, since the agents they're managing constantly mess stuff up and have been made incapable of learning from their mistakes. Their working memory is actually pretty limited too, so if your instructions get too complicated, they start forgetting the first part of what you said. You can try to compensate for their inability to learn by writing down more instructions in text files for them to read, but the issue with their working memory makes this a losing strategy in the long run. You can try to carefully control which reminders of what not to do they read based on what parts of the code they're working on, but you don't really have good tools to control that either (such tools could be built, and would have been already if those in charge weren't so incompetent and mesmerized by their own shitty mirages). So when things like this Cursor attack happen (or whenever the next big Proton vuln hits; it's clearly coming soon based on their dev practices) companies will say "humans make the same kinds of mistakes" or "human programmers might have written that vulnerability too." They're not exactly wrong, but they're eliding the fact that teams of temp interns make mistakes at rates orders of magnitude higher than teams of experienced security experts, and having fired the later to hire the former is a choice that everyone buying your product should pay attention to, whether the former comes in the form of actual incompetent interns or LLM agents. #AI #LLMs #Proton #Anthropic #Cursor

@feed thank you for your brilliant reporting and for putting pressure on #Proton, by highlighting their toxic culture. The canceling of the AI "re-interviews" is a teeny tiny gesture but IMHO the only way for the company to restore some of its credibility would be to ask for the resignation of its CEO and CTO. The damage done has been catastrophic and I don't see any other way out (unless they both go). From your piece I could sense there are many great, conscientious engineers working there

@_elena@mastodon.social HO.LY. F.U.C.K. Thanks for posting that link. I had absolutely no idea! I've been with #Proton for many years, 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘺 because I want to get away from Big Tech, not to get dragged back in via the backdoor. What a arrogant, dismissive prick, this guy. I feel sorry for the employees, but I'm gonna have to look for an alternative. It really suck, as Proton Meet and SimpleLogin are really good products. What a nightmare! 😱

My new approach vis-à-vis transitioning away from #Proton (in a slow way) - cont': For every new email that comes in that uses one of my Proton email addresses (or aliases), I am making changes, updating the email address for that account (if it's shopping/newsletter/admin) or I am notifying the sender that going forward my default email address will be the one associated to my domain name. It's a pain, but it's long overdue.

Seems like there's another wave about #proton Let's try to support people who want to switch but are not as tech-savvy. Mailbox.org might come close in my opinion. Does anyone else have a good (easy) alternative?

I'm devastated to hear that #Proton 's CEO and CTO are treating their engineers in a terrible way, blindly trusting LLMs and creating a toxic culture where speed and growth trump security. I'm not ready to make a radical switch yet but some little actions I implemented today could be useful for others, too: 1) I made my custom domain the DEFAULT email address in ProtonMail 2) I created aliases w my custom domain for shopping, newsletters, admin, etc. Hoping this will make a transition smoother

The journey of tech empowerment and liberation from tech bros can be a long, bumpy road. The biggest tech regret of my adult life is that I didn't use a custom domain name as my main email address, so that when things invariably go south, I can simply hop to a new email provider. The hundred or so email aliases I made with #Proton are a real headache right now. Time to clean up my mess. What am I talking about? A dog called Andy Yen was CEO of this very successful company, #Proton. Andy walked with his revenue in his mouth when he came across a crystal clear pond. Peering down, Andy saw another dog holding even more revenue feared the future of his business. In a moment of panic he attempted to snatch the other profit away to double his ARR. He opened his mouth to snatch it, and in doing so the company's trust and goodwill fell into the water and now he was CEO of nothing.

RE: https://mas.to/@markwyner/116184563372403595 Imagine trusting your privacy with a company who favors speed over integrity. A @protonprivacy@mastodon.social employee cautioned against releasing new code that wasn’t properly tested. Andy Yen responded to all Proton employees: “That’s bullshit and loser thinking. Of course it’s possible to be fast and secure. Stop thinking always of how to be slower, and focus more on how to be faster. Only losers think like that. Stop lovingly handcrafting all our code and use AI more.” Some of us keep warning folks to avoid Proton. Unfortunately, others, like trusted source @privacyguides@mastodon.neat.computer, ignore the red flags and recommend it anyway. If you use Proton, you’re at risk. https://www.404media.co/manifestos-fear-and-loser-thinking-inside-protons-ai-reckoning #Proton #Privacy #InfoSec #AndyYen #AI

For anyone who still thinks Proton is all that: https://www.404media.co/proton-mail-helped-fbi-unmask-anonymous-stop-cop-city-protestor/ Many of us have been raising alarm bells because their CEO is a fascist boot licker. Some say that’s hot air, but he continues to fit the M.O. https://techstory.in/proton-mail-faces-backlash-over-claims-of-political-neutrality-amid-ceos-praise-for-republican-party/ https://mas.to/@markwyner/115199799549199535 https://lgbtqia.space/@alice/113830130669521824 Ditch Proton.
