#systemd

[1/2] After a long debate we finally pulled the trigger. Earlier this morning I merged support for writing leaf components, i.e., binaries, of #systemd in Rust. Rust binaries are only marginally larger than C binaries. We don't use cargo and the binaries behave exactly like C binaries (help, command line arguments etc). I'm very happy this landed.

@bytebro@mastodonapp.uk It's very unlikely that anything of the sort will occur. There is simply a complete disconnect between Microsoft/Google/Apple user accounts anything that firmware can record in persistent storage before an operating system has even started up. I predicted, as you probably saw, the form that the compliance measures would take for #Unix and Unix-like operating systems on 2026-03-01, and both 11 hours and about 4 days later they took that form from two different people. One with pull requests on GitHub, one in the very FediVerse thread that I began. It is operating systems that will see (and indeed have seen) the updates bringing this. Not firmwares. #AgeVerification #systemd #FreeBSD #NetBSD #OpenBSD #MidnightBSD

I remember when the Linux kernel started using the GPL-2 License to prevent evil capitalism from happening. Well apparently, the kernel maintainers just took a round of steaming shits on the GPL-2 License and #AI is totally on the menu. Not good if you like a secure system. Not enough to avoid #systemD and other bloat. This is like having a treaty with the USA or Russia and getting totally invaded and communities destroyed. #NetBSD lives true to its roots, aiming for compatibility with carefully vetted code trees, and never has been a moving target. The choices we make today will save us endless grief decades from now.

After almost two years being quiet, we are back. We have now:

  • An own OCI registry at https://hub.nspawn.org with everything built using mkosi
  • A new website at https://nspawn.org with up to date documentation.
  • A new CLI client that does support our registry (or any OCI registry), DockerHub, and more. It supports entrypoints, search, pull, exec, and more docker-ish commands. It supports build too and invokes mkosi.

All the details on https://blog.nspawn.org/posts/nspawn-comeback-an-oci-hub-new-images-and-nspawn-1-0-0/

I noticed that signing in to Mastodon using 2FA didn't reliably work. Turns out my system clock was ~30 seconds behind that of the actual time (currently GMT +1 for me).

On Linux distributions that have systemd, systemd apparently synchronises your system time with a time server automatically. However, I use Devuan (i.e. Debian but without systemd) so I had to do it manually.

I used htpdate to set the time to a UK time server on pool.ntp.org like this:

sudo htpdate uk.pool.ntp.org

No need to reboot. It's now accurate to GMT+1 to within about half a second. :)

DB_POOL:140 worker: 128 queues: default, 20 push, 9 ingress, 30 mailers, 3 #anoxinon Tipps?
