The sync between rust and the GCC backend is done. We were a bit late there but finally caught up. Why do we need to "sync"? Because the GCC backend is developped in its own repository to allow us to test things without breaking the Rust compiler. It also allows us to iter much faster as we have a much smaller amount of tests needed to run. So from time to time, we need to sync the code between the two repositories. Anyway, here's the PR with 224 commits (yep, you read it right ^^'): https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/pull/159844 Next cg_gcc progress report will be very interesting to read. :3 #rust #rustlang

We've added new Rust workshop dates to the calendar for September and November. The workshops are bookable for individuals as well as teams. Our workshops are hands-on and cover real use-cases: language basics, C-to-Rust migrations, testing, WASM, and more. We can take you and your team from the basics all the way to advanced testing and telemetry instrumentation. We're a @rustfoundation@mastodon.social Trusted Training provider. #Gentoo has a strict #NoAI policy, so our projects are slop-free. Unfortunately, these days you cannot run an up-to-date system without tons of random slop packages, because everyone insists on using that crap. Gentoo supports a whole bunch of architectures that probably every other distribution dumped so far. Unfortunately, these days the available software list is shrinking, as everyone insists on adding some random meaningless dependencies on #RustLang (like using uv-build, which is the single most harmful meaningless #Python project ever created). Gentoo has a strong upstream cooperation policy. However, these days I'm afraid to file issues, because just too often they just trigger more slop. I miss the "good" old days where the worst you could expect is some toxic asshole. The state of #FreeSoftware is truly depressing. There is little joy in distribution work these days. You're overwhelmed with shit, burned out and end up doing a shitty job. And it's bad for your health. #FLOSS

After five years, I'm stepping down as team lead and member of the #rustlang library teams. It's been a wonderful time and a pleasure seeing the teams grow and evolve in these years. I'll probably still be occasionally reviewing and contributing, but I don't have any energy left to stay involved as much as I used to. At least for now. I'll still be a member of the Rust project, as part of the leadership council and organization of the Rust All-Hands 2026. I'm excited to find something new that gives me energy and motivation. Most likely, that new thing will have something to do with Rust, but I don't know yet what exactly that will be. Maybe teaching Rust, or writing another book, or solving #burnout in open source.. we'll see. :) Thanks to everyone who I worked with on the Rust standard library and language. It has been a pleasure. Our paths will definitely cross again. 💛

Playing around with Rust and building a desktop app with Tauri v2, so far so good including an HTMX integration. Looks too nice to be true! I am planning to move an Obsidian plugin to a native desktop app, so far the UI and the related CSS are playing well together 😅 small steps! #rustlang #tauri #htmx

Part of the difficulty of picking up #Rust as a language is that the only "newcomer persona" that *wouldn't* have to learn new concepts (beyond syntax and language trivia) is somebody who has a lot of experience in *both* OCaml/Haskell/Scala *and* C/C++. That is an uncommon combination, so most people will be exposed to new concepts, one way or another. #RustLang

I was asked recently about the cost of running a (#rustlang) conference and why the ticket prices are what they are. We figured we can just publicly share the numbers for RustWeek, in the name of #transparency. :) RustWeek has many subevents (conference, hackathon, unconference, workshops, Rust All Hands, etc.), but I've tried to extract just the two day conference part of RustWeek 2026: Venue rent: € ~50k Lunch, snacks, drinks two full days: € ~130k (incl. catering services and exclusive access to 1000 person restaurant all day) A/V services: € ~30k (incl. livestreaming, professionals operating the cameras/microphones/screens in the rooms, editing the recordings, etc.) Stuff we set up at the venue: € ~20k (sponsor booths, entertainment, banners, stickers, wifi, etc.) Travel compenstation for speakers: € ~10k External services: € ~25k (accounting, registration & payment, event management, insurance, etc.) Miscelaneous: € ~15k This adds up to roughly € 280k for just the two conference days. (The total for all of RustWeek is ~€ 400k.) The money we get from sponsors covers roughly half of the costs. The other half has to be covered by tickets. We are currently the biggest Rust conference with 850+ attendees. We give free tickets to all the speakers and volunteers, which is almost a hundred people total. The sponsor packages also include a total of roughly 100 tickets. That leaves ~650 sold tickets. Those are roughly 250 corporate tickets (~410 euro after tax), 300 individual tickets (~190 euro after tax), and 100 student tickets (~30 euro after tax). Accounting for the various discounts (early bird, discount codes, etc.) and overhead, this leaves us with roughly 140k. Those student tickets are sold at a significant loss, but it's very important to us to not just run this conference for those with a well paid job. Setting the ticket prices is very tricky, because you have to set them a year in advance, before you know what amount of sponsorship to expect. We only find out *after* the event if we guessed correctly or if we ran at a loss. This year, we made a (very small) profit, which we'll spend on our Rust Maintainers Team:

What unholy thing is an "AppImage"? WTF? I thought the #linux world learned it's lesson with "flatpacks" and "snap" garbage, but I guess some are giving it the ol' college try again. If you want a standalone application, make a container or a statically linked binary. (#rustlang and #golang made that popular again) Or, like, create a Makefile like a normal person. Wtf Linux world.

It's Friday again, so it's time for another update on the work on Diesel, a ORM and query builder for Rust. I published Diesel 2.3.12 today, which bumps the maximal supported libsqlite3-sys version to 0.38 and fixes an precision issue with Mysql's TIME types. See the release announcements for more details: https://github.com/diesel-rs/diesel/releases/tag/v2.3.12 We received no new bug report, but 10 new PR's this week. Several of the new PR's seek to add large new features so this required quite a bit of review time. Any help with reviewing changes to Diesel is welcome. #rust #rustlang

rust-lang/rust is adopting an LLM policy If you personally use LLMs and want to contribute to the Rust toolchain, you *really* should read it. The summary is "It's fine to use LLMs to answer questions, analyze, distill, refine, check, suggest, review. But not to *create*." Effectively, no other human should see LLM output, unless they ask for it, and LLM usage shall be disclosed. https://blog.rust-lang.org/inside-rust/2026/08/05/rust-langrust-is-adopting-an-llm-policy/ #RustLang #Rust
